Canadian Historical Sites On The Air: Celebrate Our Heritage, Amplify Your Experience

If you're passionate about Canadian history and amateur radio, there's an exciting new way to combine both interests! The Canadian Historical Sites On The Air program is live, inviting radio operators and history enthusiasts alike to discover, share, and celebrate our nation's heritage—one broadcast at a time. This initiative is about putting Canada's history on the airwaves, connecting people coast to coast and beyond.

What Is Canadian Historical Sites On The Air?

The program encourages amateur radio operators to "activate" Canada's official historical sites by setting up portable radio stations at these locations. Each activation is an opportunity to share the stories behind these landmarks, connect with other operators, and help more people appreciate the significance of our shared past.

As the program grows, you'll find more details and the full list of eligible sites at historyontheair.com, with updates rolling out over the next few weeks.

The Scope of Canada's Historic Sites

Did you know Canada is home to over 1,000 designated National Historic Sites? These range from ancient Indigenous settlements to iconic battlefields, architectural marvels, and cultural landmarks. Parks Canada manages 171 of these sites, but many more are cared for by provinces, municipalities, and local heritage groups.

Across the country, you'll find:

  • Over 1,000 National Historic Sites
  • More than 200 Parks Canada-administered locations
  • Thousands of provincially and municipally recognized heritage properties

These sites collectively tell the story of Canada's diverse peoples, pivotal events, and evolving identity. According to the video “Canada’s Most Historic Places”, highlights include places like the Fortress of Louisbourg in Nova Scotia, the L’Anse aux Meadows Viking settlement in Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Rideau Canal in Ontario—each with its own fascinating story and role in shaping the nation.

Double—and Sometimes Triple—the Fun: Co-Activations with POTA and VEFF

One of the most exciting aspects of the Canadian Historical Sites On The Air program is its synergy with other popular amateur radio activities. Over 80% of our historical sites are also eligible for Parks On The Air (POTA) activations, and more than 50% overlap with VEFF (World Wide Flora & Fauna) protected areas. You can maximize your time and effort by earning contacts and credits across multiple award programs during a single activation.

For example, activating a site like Monument-Lefebvre National Historic Site counts for our program and POTA and VEFF, making it a triple win for history buffs and radio enthusiasts!
