Activating Georges Island: A Special Event on the Air

On June 30th, 2025, I'll be heading out for a unique amateur radio adventure—activating Georges Island National Historic Site in the heart of Halifax Harbour. This activation is part of the Canadian Historical Sites On The Air (HSOTA) program and the World Wide Flora & Fauna (WWFF) initiative, making it a rare and exciting opportunity for chasers and history buffs.

About Georges Island National Historic Site

Georges Island is a small drumlin in Halifax Harbour, but its historical significance is anything but small. For centuries, it played a crucial role in the defence of Halifax, with its labyrinth of tunnels and fortifications standing as a testament to the city's military past. The island was once a hunting and fishing ground for the Mi'kmaq people before becoming a key part of British and later Canadian coastal defences. Today, visitors can explore the tunnels beneath Fort Charlotte and take in panoramic views of the harbour, all while stepping back in time to experience a vital piece of Nova Scotia's history (more info).

The Canadian Historical Sites On The Air Program

The Canadian Historical Sites On The Air (HSOTA) program encourages amateur radio operators to visit and activate sites of historical importance nationwide. Each site is assigned a unique reference—Georges Island is CA/NS-013—which helps operators and chasers track their contacts and learn more about Canada's rich heritage. Activations like this one not only promote amateur radio but also help raise awareness of our national history and the importance of preserving these special places.

What to Expect From the Activation

For this event, I'll be using the special callsign VC9DT/P. I plan to be on the air from approximately 1400 to 1700 UTC, operating on most HF bands with a focus on SSB and digital modes (FT8/FT4). Whether you're a WWFF hunter, an HSOTA chaser, or just looking for a new Canadian island in your log, I hope you'll tune in and make a contact. QSLs will be available via my home call, VE9CF.

Why Georges Island?

Activating Georges Island is something I've looked forward to for a long time. The combination of natural beauty, fascinating history, and the challenge of operating from an island in the middle of Halifax Harbour makes it a truly memorable location. Plus, it's a chance to connect with fellow radio enthusiasts and share a bit of Nova Scotia's story with the world.

Feel free to reach out if you have questions about the activation or want to learn more about Georges Island or the HSOTA program. I hope to hear from many of you on the air as VC9DT/P from this iconic Canadian landmark!
