First Canadian Historical Sites On The Air Activation at the Convent of the Immaculate Conception Provincial Historic Site, Bouctouche, NB

I recently had the pleasure of completing my first Canadian Historical Sites On The Air (HSOTA) activation at the Convent of the Immaculate Conception Provincial Historic Site (CA/NB-102) in Bouctouche, New Brunswick. With 184 QSOs logged over a fantastic afternoon, this activation was not only a great radio experience but also a meaningful journey into the rich heritage of the area along the scenic Northumberland Strait.

A Memorable Afternoon at a Historic Site

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the warm hospitality I received from Pierre, the dedicated caretaker who has looked after the site since 1976. Pierre kindly invited me for a personal tour, sharing fascinating stories and insights about the convent’s history and its role in the community. His passion for preserving the site brought the past vividly to life and made the activation even more special.

History of the Convent of the Immaculate Conception

The Convent of the Immaculate Conception was established in 1880 under the guidance of Father François-Xavier-Joseph Michaud. It was built to provide education for young girls in the region, reflecting the community’s commitment to learning and faith. The building itself is notable for its distinctive two-story mansard roof and its picturesque location overlooking Bouctouche Bay.

A key figure in the convent’s history was Marguerite Maillet, who generously donated 40 acres of land for its construction. She later became Sister Marie-Julienne with the Sisters of Charity of the Immaculate Conception and served as Sister Superior from 1892 until her death in 1911. The convent continued its educational mission under the Notre-Dame-du-Sacré-Coeur sisters from 1924 to 1969, who maintained its legacy of teaching and community service.
